I don’t even care about them not getting such-and-such character “right” or another character being nothing but a name-slap. And for those of us paying enough attention during the movie to see this, Birds of Prey was a fucking excruciating experience. If you rearranged all the scenes of Birds of Prey into chronological order, anyone would be able to see what a pathetic, empty joke the story was. But in Birds of Prey, it is only used as a crutch in an attempt to hide from the audience how little is actually going on. A narrative told out of order can be an effective tool for all kinds of reasons. The way they didn’t try with the film’s structure. Like the writer couldn’t even be bothered to try. The entire movie is filled with laziness and shortcuts in the writing. That’s the fucking job of writing.Īnd that’s just one example. And if they have no interest in a particular subject like police procedure in this case, that’s when the writer has to push themselves even harder to do the work. If the writer has no knowledge of police procedure (and why would they?), then they have to do the research. It came off as bad, cheap parody, but was intended to be taken seriously. It plays out like the writer watched one episode of Law & Order SVU 15 years ago, and they were basing the detectives’ procedure and dialogue entirely on that half-faded 15 year-old memory alone. They haven’t learned how to do the work of writing yet.įor example, the part where Montoya recreates the scene of a murder is laugh-out-loud awful. Birds of Prey was the most laughingly amateurish, hacky, lazily-written movie I’ve seen in years. I’d love another movie starring her.īut with a different writer. One of the best examples of this kind of storytelling is here in the introduction of Sin, a young girl destined to become the next Lady Shiva, a terrifying assassin. Throughout their time as a team, these heroes helped several young women find their way and did what they could to guide the next generation before they could become villains or get themselves killed. Speaking of kids, while the movie version was nothing like the Cassandra Cain from the comics, the choice to include a foul-mouthed kid with a penchant for petty crime is not an unfamiliar way to tell a Birds of Prey story.
